A Wispy Flower to Cheer A Busy Day
Other names — Clitoria Ternatea/Butterfly Pea Flower
Butterfly Blue Pea is a perennial creeper plant grown around Equatorial Asia. It’s low maintenance and drought tolerant. Grows in almost any soil. The flowers wear a pretty deep blue skirt against lush green vines. The petals are dainty, fluttering in the wind like a butterfly. They’re grown from aged seeds.
Like butterflies, she breezes into local dishes leaving blue tints in rice/savory snacks. In Thailand, fresh flowers are battered and fried. Elsewhere, the locals dry these flowers for natural dye. Often used as an herb for cooking or medicinal purpose.
My favorite is when it’s brewed with lemongrass and chilled with a squeeze of lemon. A perfect end to the day as I watch the blue concoction turn purple.
